Classes for Children and Teenagers

Mature young people age 13 and above are welcome and encouraged to join adult classes. All classes are taught by owner and director, Lindsay Fogg-Willits, unless otherwise noted.

PROJECTS DO NOT REPEAT FROM SESSION TO SESSION.

Sculpture Extravaganza (Ages 6 - 12)

Mondays, March 24 - May 12 (no class 4/21); 7 weeks 3:45pm - 5:15pm $130 (includes materials)

Children in this class will turn their ideas into 3-dimensional pieces of art! We will work with clay, wood, cardboard, paper mache, wire and more to create a variety of small and large sculptures. This is a great class for children who have big imaginations and a love for building! Come ready to get your hands messy! Smocks are provided.

Drawing and Painting (Ages 6 - 12)

Tuesdays, March 25 - May 13 (no class 4/22); 7 weeks 3:45pm - 5:15pm $125 (includes materials)

This class will help students develop their painting and drawing skills through weekly technique demonstrations, material experimentation and projects which focus on a variety of subject matter. In addition to exploring the ways in which value, line, color, perspective and design can enhance a work of art, we will also look to past and contemporary artists for inspiration. This will be a fun and relaxed introduction for students who feel less confident in their abilities as well as an opportunity for students with more experience to develop their skills.

Art Exploration (Ages 5 - 12)

Wednesdays, March 26 - May 14 (no class 4/23); 7 weeks 3:45pm - 5:15pm $125 (materials included)

Thursdays, March 27 - May 15 (no class 4/24); 7 weeks 3:45pm - 5:15pm $125 (materials included)

This class is perfect for children who want to try a little bit of everything! Students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of materials and techniques. Throughout the session we will experiment with painting, printmaking, drawing, fiber arts, sculpture, collage, and more! At the end of each class there will be "choice time": an opportunity for students to explore materials and subject matter of their choice.

Sock Critters! - A Parent/Child Workshop with artist, Hilary Emerson Lay!

(Ages 8 + with a parent) Sunday, April 6 from 1-3pm; $25 for a parent/child pair; $10 for additional participants (please preregister by Wednesday, April 2)

Come in with your old socks and leave with your own stuffed critter friend! Hilary has been creating wonky stuffed animals out of socks for 8 years, and will show you how two socks, some basic sewing skills, stuffing, and two buttons can make a whimsical little friend. And after you're done sewing, you get to name them and give them personalities! All you need to bring is at least two socks (though the more the better!) and your imagination! Hilary will bring ribbon and buttons, but feel free to bring those, too! Parents can choose to help their child make a sock critter, or they can make one alongside them.
Mixed media artist Hilary Emerson Lay, a recent Northampton transplant, has had a thriving side career as a working artist since 2006. Her primary forms of art are using pages from old dictionaries and gouache to create brightly-colored, dynamic paintings, and sewing wonky critters out of socks, which she has made hundreds and hundreds of over the years. Hilary also teaches workshops on how to use the internet to successfully market yourself as an artist. She has exhibited her paintings at dozens of venues, from coffee shops to galleries, and is constantly working on commission requests and stock for her Etsy shop. She left her job in 2012 to do a three-month artist-in-residency program at Elsewhere Studios in Colorado, and this past summer, she was one of two art instructors at a summer art camp in Hatfield for kids ages 6-12. Hilary is thrilled to be working with Art Always and looks forward to meeting a whole bunch of new people! You can find Hilary online at www.hilaryemersonlay.com, etsy.com/shop/hilaryemersonlay, and facebook/com/hilaryemersonlayart.

SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING FOR ARTISTS: No, it’s not scary. Yes, you need to do it.

Tuesday, May 20 6-8pm $50 ($40 when you register for the Etsy 101 class as well)

Being an artist is tiring enough; how can you possibly find time to market your work? In this class, we’ll go over the importance of having a strong web presence, including having your own website and blog, and using Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flickr to get your name out there and increase your visibility. Social media marketing can be exhausting and overwhelming, but we’ll go over ways to make it manageable, leaving you plenty of time to make art!
